The 2000 movie Pay It Forward which stars Kevin Spacey and Haley Joel Osment might not have been a block buster hit, but the message have left a strong impact within humanitarian communities. The movie plot was simple: the notion of paying a favor not back, but forward--repaying good deeds not with payback, but with new good deeds done to three new people. And each of those three new people will repay their good deeds not with payback but will new good deeds to three other new people each, (that’s a total of twelve new people with good deeds). And the notion will continue. Confusing? No, not really. You do me a favor, as a payback, I help two other people. Those two other people help four people. Those four people help eight more people…and so on.
The concept was described by Benjamin Franklin and popularized in 1951 by author Robert A. Heinlein in his book Between Planets.
I do not pretend to give such a Sum; I only lend it to you. When you [...] meet with another honest Man in similar Distress, you must pay me by lending this Sum to him; enjoining him to discharge the Debt by a like operation, when he shall be able, and shall meet with another opportunity. I hope it may thus go thro' many hands, before it meets with a Knave that will stop its Progress. This is a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money. Benjamin Franklin
